Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul stated today that all lawsuits related to "speech offences" will be automatically dismissed with the repeal of the Cyber Security Act (CSA).
"We have long announced the repeal of the Cyber Security Act, and as part of this, all cases related to 'speech offences' will be dropped," he explained.
Dr. Nazrul emphasized that cases against individuals with differing opinions, or those who have been targeted for expressing their views or dissent, will be dismissed simultaneously with the repeal of the CSA.
However, he clarified that trials related to computer offences, such as hacking, fraud, and blackmailing, will continue as normal.
The law adviser made these comments while attending the DRU-Desh TV Best Reporting Award-2024 ceremony as the chief guest at Dhaka Club this afternoon.
In his address, he criticized certain journalist leaders for focusing on personal gain rather than advocating for the welfare of ordinary journalists. "Some so-called journalist leaders are neither true journalists nor real leaders. They have exploited ordinary journalists, amassed wealth, and become influential by holding them hostage," he said.
Dr. Nazrul further asserted, "The current interim government has not taken any action to harass journalists, nor have any cases been filed against them by the government or the police."
In her speech, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, stressed the importance of fearless and impartial journalism for the protection of democracy and the environment. She reiterated the government's commitment to fostering a supportive environment for journalism.
The event was chaired by Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo, President of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), and conducted by DRU General Secretary Mohi Uddin. Other speakers included former DRU President Shafiqul Karim and Desh TV Managing Director Arif Hasan.
