Police Raid Jai Jai Din Office in Search of HRC Group Chief Sayeed Hossain

The founding chairman and CEO of HRC Group Sayeed Hossain Chowdhury was arrested on Jul 2008 for 'violating emergency powers rules' through his alleged money laundering activities

Narayanganj police have raided the Jai Jai Din office in Karwan Bazar to arrest Sayeed Hossain Chowdhury, the Bengali newspaper’s editorial board president and publisher.

The raid was carried out around 11:45 pm on Monday on the HRC Bhaban, said Narayanganj's Superintendent of Police Pratyush Kumar Majumdar.

Sayeed, the founder of HRC Group, is a suspect in a murder that took place during the anti-discrimination movement, he said.

Police failed to locate him in the newspaper’s Karwan Bazar office on Monday, he added.

Sayeed could not be reached for comment.

Founding editor of the Bengali daily Shafik Rehman went to Jai Jai Din’s Tejgaon office on Dec 15 following the change of the country’s political landscape and was greeted with flowers.

The office was moved to Karwan Bazar’s HRC Bhaban on the same day. Shafik is now preparing to introduce a newspaper, Jai Jai Din Protidin, from the Tejgaon office.

Alongside media, the HRC Group invests in agricultural products, tea, real estate, finance sector and shipping businesses.

Sayeed, a director of One Bank and a former Dhaka MP, is the brother of Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury. Their father Hedayet Hossain Chowdhury was the founder of Karnaphuli Group.
