Abidul Islam Khan, the defeated vice-president candidate backed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in the DUCSU elections, has called for a fair investigation into the election allegations.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Abidul expressed hope that the university administration would conduct a “thorough inquiry” on the issues raised during the election.
He described the day’s events, starting with “media propaganda” against him and continuing with various issues he encountered throughout the day.
“I still hope that the administration will take proper action on all these allegations,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, his running mate for GS, Shaikh Tanvir Hamim, respected the students’ verdict but expressed disappointment with the result. "The support I received from Dhaka University students was not properly reflected in the results," Hamim wrote on Facebook.
Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed panel, swept the election, running away with nine out of 12 posts, including VP and GS.
Abidul with 5,708 votes came second to Shibir’s candidate Shadik Kayem, who won with 14,042 votes. No Chhatra Dal candidates won any positions in the election.
Abidul reflected on his journey, acknowledging that he had not fully met own expectations. He thanked Dhaka University’s students for their support and emphasised that his political journey was far from over.
"My journey is long; I am still a student leader of BNP at Dhaka University,” he added.
He also expressed his commitment to fulfilling the promises made in his manifesto.
“I will do whatever it takes to get from the administration what is due for a student leader. The new start of student politics at Dhaka University will be led by us, God willing,” Abidul vowed.
Hamim admitted this defeat was his first in political life but attributed it to fate and circumstances.
“I have lost a lot in my personal life, and this defeat is due to fate, environment, and time,” he added.
Hamim thanked BNP leaders, especially Tarique Rahman, and all the students who supported him, saying that he would remain grateful to them.
Farhad, from the Shibir-backed panel, won the GS post with 10,794 votes, defeating Hamim, who polled 5,283.
