The Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) has suspended its scheduled "mass gathering" following a direct request from Inqilab Moncho as clashes with police continue to rock the capital.

DUCSU General Secretary SM Farhad announced the decision during a press conference outside the DUCSU building at 9:30pm on Friday.

He noted that the student body initially expected the interim government to deliver swift justice following the nationwide outcry over Sharif Osman bin Hadi’s murder.

The student leader described the DMP commissioner’s personal presence during the crackdown on protesters as a “shameless display of mockery toward a legitimate movement”.

Explaining the decision, Farhad revealed that despite protest calls across campuses, including JUCSU and RUCSU, Inqilab Moncho leaders repeatedly phoned DUCSU with concerns over potential sabotage.

They fear that elements of the Awami League are working alongside police to “incite violence and ridicule the legacy of the July Uprising”.

"A hidden faction of the Awami League has now embedded itself within the police force," Farhad said.

He added that DUCSU is scaling back its on-campus programmes to prevent these “conspirators” from hijacking the movement and urged other campuses to follow suit.

The DUCSU GS also alleged that Awami League loyalists have infiltrated the ongoing Shahbagh blockade to lead the movement astray.

"We will force the interim government to ensure justice for martyr Hadi through different programmes in the future," Farhad declared.

He called for a UN-backed independent commission to investigate the killing and expose which foreign states are providing sanctuary to the assassin.

Farhad also demanded accountability for the police officers who reportedly mocked the activists during the day's unrest.
