Special prayers, including Doa Mahfil, Milad, and Khatme Quran, have been held nationwide, appealing for the early recovery of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Mosques, temples, social organisations, and other places of worship across the country hosted ceremonies, reflecting the nation’s deep concern for her health.
Meanwhile, BNP senior leader Mirza Abbas alleged on Sunday that Khaleda Zia’s deteriorating condition is a direct result of the “mistreatment” she endured during her imprisonment.
“If the 1/11 political changeover had not occurred, and if she had received proper care in prison, our leader would not have fallen into this condition. She was denied adequate medical attention, which has left her seriously ill,” Abbas said.
Abbas, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, made the remarks during a doa and milad mahfil organised by the party’s Dhaka South City unit at the Nayapaltan Community Centre, seeking divine blessings for the critically ill Khaleda Zia.
He emphasised Khaleda Zia’s importance to the nation during this critical period and praised the public response.
“People from all communities—Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians—and from every walk of life are praying for her recovery. Everyone is appealing to Allah to keep our leader alive. Allah will surely hear the prayers of the oppressed,” he said.
Abbas urged followers to offer sincere prayers from the heart, not merely as formal rituals, to ensure they reach Allah and aid her swift recovery. He also lauded Khaleda Zia’s lifelong dedication to Bangladesh, noting:
“We are proud of our leader. She has always said, ‘I have friends abroad, but no masters.’ She chose to remain among her people, despite repeated attempts by the previous government to send her overseas during 1/11.”
BNP Standing Committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy described Khaleda Zia as a guardian of the nation and highlighted the widespread prayers for her recovery.
“Prayers have been officially requested by the state, and even the President has urged the nation to pray for her. I know everyone is raising their hands before Allah for her wellbeing,” he added.
Khaleda Zia, 80, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on the night of November 23 on the advice of a medical board after being diagnosed with infections in her heart and lungs. She is also battling pneumonia and remains under intensive observation in the Critical Care Unit (CCU), receiving care from specialist doctors from both Bangladesh and abroad. BNP leaders described her condition as “extremely critical” on Friday night.
The former Prime Minister has long-standing health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney problems.
Across the country, communities have held prayers for her recovery:
Dinajpur: Doa and Munajat at Bandhan Community Centre, led by district BNP president Advocate Md. Mofazzal Hossain Dulal.
Habiganj: Milad Mahfil and food distribution at Habiganj Orphanage, with BNP Central Organising Secretary Alhaj GK Gaus as chief guest.
Shirajganj: Recitation of Fatiha and Darood Sharif, led by BNP Standing Committee member and former minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council: Special prayers at Dhakeshwari National Temple.
Agrani Bank PLC: Zia Parishad prayers at head office.

Similar ceremonies were held in Sylhet, Cumilla, Patuakhali, Nandail, Vandaria, Shoilakupa and other districts, reflecting nationwide solidarity and concern for the BNP leader’s recovery.
