Tarique Rahman Set to Return Home Soon, Confirms Salahuddin

Express Report

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has indicated that the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, is likely to return to Bangladesh soon, offering hope to party supporters amid the ongoing critical health condition of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Speaking to reporters after attending a BNP Standing Committee meeting in Gulshan on Monday evening, Salahuddin said the committee had discussed election strategies and campaign plans. Asked specifically about Tarique Rahman’s return, he said, “He will return soon, InshaAllah.”

Salahuddin added that Dr AZM Zahid, the personal physician of Khaleda Zia, would brief the media on all matters relating to the former prime minister’s health. The meeting, held at the BNP chairperson’s political office, began around 8:30pm and continued until 11pm.

Since her admission to Evercare Hospital on 23 November, Khaleda Zia has been under intensive treatment in the Coronary Care Unit for multiple complications affecting her liver, kidneys, and heart.

No Legal Barrier to Tarique’s Return, Says Law Adviser

Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul confirmed that there is no legal obstacle preventing Tarique Rahman from returning to Bangladesh. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Monday, he said, “If any obstacles exist, we will certainly cooperate. We will make the best possible arrangements for his security.”

Dr Nazrul stressed that the decision rests entirely with Tarique Rahman. “He has the authority to choose the appropriate time. I believe he will return when he considers it right,” he said.

Addressing questions about why Tarique has not yet returned, the adviser emphasised that speculation is unnecessary. “Many people raise questions about his return, but this is a matter between a mother and her son. We must understand that this is a mother-son relationship. He knows best when to come and when to take any action,” he added.
