BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that the fall of autocracy on December 6, 1990, paved the way for the liberation of democracy in Bangladesh.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday, he said, “December 6 is an unforgettable day. On this day in 1990, the era of autocracy came to an end through a bloody and arduous struggle.”
Tarique Rahman recalled that on March 24, 1982, Hussain Muhammad Ershad broke his professional oath and forcibly overthrew elected President Justice Abdus Sattar, dismantling democracy and imposing unconstitutional rule.
“This subverted the constitutional multi-party system guaranteed by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the great announcer of our independence. The autocrat Ershad reduced democratic institutions to ruins,” he said.
Referring to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia as ‘Deshnetri’, he added, “To restore democracy, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia led a tireless struggle for nine long years with unwavering determination, earning her the reputation of an uncompromising leader. She mobilised a mass movement that could not be stopped. On December 6, 1990, democracy was finally liberated, defeating the autocrat through the combined strength of students and the general public.”
Tarique Rahman also criticised the Awami League, describing it as a historic destroyer of democracy. “Inspired by the spirit of that hard-won democracy, students and the general people again defeated a vicious fascist force on August 5, 2024. Historically, the Awami League has been a relentless enemy of democracy. Following the end of Sheikh Hasina’s misrule, our struggle must continue to ensure the full revival of democracy and the establishment of democratic values across the state and society.”
He further highlighted the plight of Begum Khaleda Zia under Sheikh Hasina’s rule, saying, “Our ‘Mother of Democracy’, Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia, was subjected to imprisonment, oppression, and relentless persecution. Her health has now deteriorated dangerously due to continuous torture and abuse. I pray to Allah for her speedy recovery.”
Tarique Rahman also noted that millions of nationalist activists endured unbounded oppression and the country as a whole was held captive under autocratic misrule.
He paid homage to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the anti-autocracy movement from 1982 to 1990 and prayed for the eternal peace of their souls.
Concluding his message, he called upon all democratic forces to remain united at all times, warning that vigilance is essential to ensure that anti-democratic forces never rise again.
