Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman on Friday dismissed debates over whether BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman is a Bangladeshi voter, calling such discussions “irrelevant” in light of his declared intention to contest the upcoming national election.

“Since he has sought to run in the election, it must be assumed he is a citizen and a voter of Bangladesh,” the AG told reporters after attending the founding anniversary of Haji Kalyan Sangstha at the Shailkupa Government Degree College ground.

The issue of Tarique Rahman’s voter status has been raised repeatedly in political and media circles, particularly given his long-term residence in London and legal entanglements in the country. Critics and political opponents have questioned whether he meets the eligibility requirements to contest parliamentary polls, citing concerns over citizenship verification, absentee status, and compliance with electoral regulations.

In response to these debates, the AG emphasised that the law recognises an individual’s intention to contest as indicative of citizenship and voter legitimacy, effectively rendering such controversies secondary. “It is not appropriate to speculate or question voter eligibility in this context,” he said.

Speaking further, Md Asaduzzaman touched on the ongoing trial concerning the July massacre, noting that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure speedy and uninterrupted justice. “The process is progressing, leaving no room for disruption or delay,” he said.

The programme, organised by Haji Kalyan Sangstha, was presided over by its president, Alhaj Lutfor Rahman Tulu. The event saw participation from local community leaders and supporters, who lauded the AG’s remarks on law, justice, and political stability.
