Express Report

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit his ancestral home in Bogura on Sunday, marking his first journey outside Dhaka since returning to Bangladesh after 17 years in exile in London. Supporters and party loyalists are preparing to welcome him with enthusiasm, hailing the occasion as the homecoming of the “son of the house.”

“His visit carries profound significance, both politically and emotionally,” said a district BNP leader. Festive anticipation has gripped BNP officials, activists, and ordinary residents across the district, who are eagerly preparing to greet him.

Bogura district BNP President Rezaul Karim Badsha said the visit is “not merely an organisational tour but a historic moment for the Bogura BNP.” According to party sources, Rahman will depart from his Gulshan residence on Sunday morning, with stops expected at Tangail by 1:00 pm, Sirajganj at 3:00 pm, and arrival in Bogura between 8:00 and 10:00 pm, where he will spend the night at a four-star hotel in suburban Chilimpur.

On Monday morning, January 12, he will attend a BNP-organised mass prayer meeting at the Central High School grounds in Bogura city, dedicated to the eternal peace of his mother, BNP Chairperson and three-time Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and his father, party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman. The event is expected to draw a large turnout from across Bogura and neighbouring districts.

Following the prayers, Rahman will travel through key city intersections, including Satmatha, Tinmatha, Charmatha, and Matidali, before visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shah Sultan Balkhi Mahisawar (R.A.) at Mahasthangarh in Shibganj. He is scheduled to meet BNP’s candidate for Bogura-2, Upazila President Mir Shah-e Alam, and attend a memorial prayer for Khaleda Zia at Mokamtala.

Later, he will visit Pirganj in Rangpur to participate in programmes, including a visit to the grave of July 1 martyr Abu Sayeed. He is scheduled to reach Dinajpur by 9:00 pm and Thakurgaon at 11:00 pm, where he will stay overnight. On January 13, he will continue his visits to Thakurgaon, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat, returning to Rangpur by 11:00 pm for an overnight stay, before attending programmes there on January 14. He will also join a BNP programme at his father’s house in Bagbari, Gabtoli, Bogura, before returning to Dhaka by 8:00 pm the same day.

Tarique Rahman is contesting the 13th National Parliament elections as a direct candidate for the first time, standing from Bogura-6 (Sadar) and Dhaka-17 constituencies. Analysts say this move signals a significant shift in BNP’s election strategy, with Bogura-6 holding historic importance as a BNP stronghold. The constituency has consistently elected BNP candidates until 2008, with Khaleda Zia herself winning four times.

Ahead of his visit, Bogura city has undergone extensive preparations. The room designated for him at the district BNP office on Nababbari Road has been refurbished, prominently displaying his name. Roads, including the Satmatha-to-Phultala stretch, have been repaired, and renovation work is underway at the long-neglected Shakpala intersection park, set to reopen as a renewed public landmark.

The visit is widely seen as a moment of political and emotional resonance, reinforcing Tarique Rahman’s connection to his party, his family legacy, and his supporters, while signalling BNP’s renewed energy ahead of the February elections.
