Leaders of a breakaway National Citizen Party (NCP) faction have announced the formation of a new political platform.

The official announcement of the new political initiative will be made at 3pm on Friday at the Central Shaheed Minar, confirmed Moinul Islam Tuhin, one of the leaders who recently quit the NCP.

“Young people of various political ideologies, student leaders and individuals from different religions and ethnic groups will join the initiatives,” he said.

The platform, ideologically rooted in social democracy, will be joined by current and former leaders of the left-leaning Bangladesh Chhatra Union, as well as socio-cultural activists who played active roles in the uprising to topple the Sheikh Hasina government.

The leaders of the platform also included Anik Roy and Alik Mree.

Anik is a former general secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU). He had joined the NCP as a joint convenor. Moinul Islam is a writer and activist and was a joint member secretary of the NCP. Indigenous student leader Alik Mree was also an NCP leader.

They said individuals such as former BCU president Baki Billah, writer and researcher Mir Hojaifa Al Mamduh, writer Ferdous Ara Rumee, former Students Against Discrimination coordinator Nazifa Jannat, and political activist Meghmallar Bosu are a part of the initiative.

Distinguishing itself from traditional political parties, the organisers plan to introduce a rotating leadership structure to prevent the accumulation of power.

“The leadership structure will be fluid, meaning the chief of the platform will change every three or four months,” Anik explained.

“We cannot say at this stage whether the initiative will evolve into a political party,” said Moinul.

The platform is yet to be named, he said.

The platform will primarily serve as a meeting point for those who actively participated in the July Uprising, especially left-leaning individuals, its leaders said. It will also include members from civil society, and activists are expected to join as well.
