  16 Dec 2025, 02:39

As part of the nationwide grand celebrations of the Victory Day today, Bangladesh is set to make a world record by parachuting with the highest number of national flags.

As per the government's special programmes to mark the country's 54 years of independence, 54 paratroopers from the Bangladesh Army, Air Force, and Navy will perform a flag-bearing skydive at Tejgaon old airport here around a 11:40 am tomorrow, setting a new Guinness World Record.

Prior to the parachuting, the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force will conduct separate fly-past demonstrations at the same venue from 11:00 am.

A special Victory Day band show will also take place there.

Similar fly-past demonstrations will also be conducted by the armed forces in other cities across the country. Alongside them, the police, BGB, and Ansar will organize band shows nationwide. All of the events will be open to the public.

A total of 54 paratroopers from the Bangladesh Army, Air Force, and Navy—symbolising each year since independence—will descend from the skies carrying the national flag in a breathtaking tribute to the country’s hard-won freedom. Officials confirmed at a preparatory meeting at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Dhaka on Monday that the daring display is set to secure a Guinness World Record.

The parachute spectacle forms the highlight of a nationwide programme spearheaded by the government to honour the heroes of the Liberation War. From fly-past demonstrations at the old Tejgaon Airport to Victory Day songs and cultural performances across all 64 districts, the celebrations are set to engulf the nation in a wave of patriotic fervour.

Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam described Victory Day as “a glorious day for Bangladesh,” emphasising that this year’s observances aim to engage citizens of all ages, religions, and backgrounds. “The entire nation will come together in celebration,” he said.

Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki highlighted that the spirit of the Liberation War continues to inspire successive generations. “The songs and performances during the 2024 mass uprising drew deeply from our history, showing how strongly young people value the nation and its identity,” he added.

Beyond the skydiving display, the day will feature an extensive programme: fly-pasts nationwide, Victory Day band performances, recitations, essay-writing and painting competitions for children, as well as Jatra Pala and acrobatic shows in Dhaka. Cinemas will screen Liberation War films free of charge, museums will open without entry fees, and naval and coast guard vessels will welcome the public from dawn to dusk.

Religious institutions across the country will hold prayers for the martyrs and wounded veterans, while hospitals, orphanages, old-age homes, and welfare centres will provide enhanced meals for residents.

The celebrations will also include the nationwide hoisting of the flag, building illuminations, a 31-gun salute, and reception ceremonies for freedom fighters at district and upazila levels, ensuring that the spirit of Victory Day resonates in every corner of Bangladesh.

Officials expressed hope that this year’s monumental programme—culminating in the record-breaking parachute display—will eclipse all previous celebrations, leaving the nation awash with pride, patriotism, and the enduring legacy of independence.
