A horrifying tragedy struck Rahimapur village under Taraganj upazila when retired teacher and freedom fighter Yogesh Chandra Roy, 75, and his wife Suborna Roy, 60, were brutally murdered in their home for just Tk 8,000, police said.

Superintendent of Police Md Marufat Hussaine revealed the grim details during a press briefing at the couple’s home on Friday afternoon, describing the killings as “extremely sensitive” and vowing to ensure exemplary punishment.

Police said the perpetrator, 22-year-old Morsalin, was arrested early Friday in Shermast Balapara, Alampur Union. A student at Taraganj Degree College and assistant to a local tiler, Morsalin confessed during interrogation. Officers recovered the handle of the axe used in the murders and are still searching for the missing blade.

According to his confession, Morsalin owed Tk 8,000 and hatched a desperate plan to steal the money from the house where he had worked just two days earlier. On Saturday night, he broke into the home, reportedly attacking Suborna first and then Yogesh with the axe he had brought.

After the killings, he rifled through a cupboard with a hammer, searching for money, but claimed he found nothing. He then discarded the axe into a nearby pond while fleeing the scene.

“The murders of a heroic freedom fighter and his wife have shocked the entire community. We are leaving no stone unturned to uncover every detail of this cruel act,” SP Marufat said.

The couple’s lifeless bodies were discovered on Sunday morning, December 7, after neighbours, receiving no response at the door, entered the house and found the victims. Their eldest son, Shoven Chandra Roy, later filed a case with Taraganj Police Station against an unidentified assailant.

The incident has left the village gripped by sorrow and outrage, mourning the loss of a freedom fighter and his devoted spouse, victims of a shocking act of greed and violence.
