Express Report
  01 Jan 2026, 06:57

A cold wave has engulfed five districts and two divisions, with mercury in several regions increasing after fog cleared.

A mild to moderate cold was sweeping over the districts of Madaripur, Gopalganj, Rajshahi, Pabna and Sirajganj and the Khulna and Barishal divisions, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

In the 24 hours ending at 6am on Wednesday, the Met Office said, Bangladesh’s lowest minimum temperature of 7.5°C was recorded in Gopalganj.

Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said this was the lowest temperature recorded this winter.

A mild cold wave occurs when the minimum temperature remains between 10°C and 8°C, while a moderate cold wave is defined as when the minimum temperature drops below 8°C.

On Wednesday, the lowest minimum temperature in Dhaka was recorded to be 16°C.

The BMD warned that the overall temperature may drop in the first week of the new year, giving rise to another cold wave over larger areas.

The BMD also said the overall weather was likely to remain dry over the next five days. The skies will remain partly cloudy.

The minimum temperature on Thursday might remain unchanged, while the maximum temperature on Friday might increase.

Moderate to dense fog might occur on Thursday and Friday at night and in the morning hours.

Dense fog could disrupt the air traffic, inland water transport, and road communications, the BMD said.

The situation improved in Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and Dhaka city and district after the fog cleared with the sun finally showing up after several days.
