As Bangladesh prepares to celebrate the 54th Victory Day on 16 December, the nation is gearing up for a historic spectacle: the largest-ever flag-bearing parachute display in the world.

A total of 54 paratroopers from the Bangladesh Army, Air Force, and Navy—representing each year since independence—will leap from the skies, carrying the national flag in a dramatic tribute to the country’s hard-won freedom. The daring display is set to claim a Guinness World Record, officials confirmed at a preparatory meeting at the Chief Adviser’s Office in Dhaka on Monday.

The event forms the centrepiece of a nationwide programme led by the government to honour the heroes of the Liberation War. From fly-past demonstrations at the old Tejgaon Airport to Victory Day songs and cultural shows in all 64 districts, the celebrations will engulf the country in a wave of patriotic fervour.

Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam described Victory Day as “a glorious day for Bangladesh,” highlighting that this year’s observances aim to include people of all ages, religions, and backgrounds. “The entire nation will join in the celebration together,” he said.

Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki noted that the spirit of the Liberation War continues to inspire new generations. “The songs and performances during the 2024 mass uprising drew deeply from our history. This shows how profoundly young people value the nation and its identity,” he said.

Beyond the skydiving spectacle, extensive programmes will mark the day: fly-pasts across the country, Victory Day band shows, recitation, essay writing, and painting competitions for children, and Jatra Pala and acrobatic shows in Dhaka. Cinema halls will screen Liberation War films free of charge, museums will open without entry fees, and naval and coast guard vessels will welcome the public from dawn to dusk.

Religious institutions nationwide will hold prayers for the souls of martyred freedom fighters and for the well-being of wounded veterans, while hospitals, orphanages, old-age homes, and welfare centres will provide improved meals for residents.

The celebrations will also include nationwide hoisting of the flag, building illuminations, a 31-gun salute, and reception ceremonies for freedom fighters at district and upazila levels, ensuring the spirit of Victory Day is felt from every corner of Bangladesh.

Officials hope that this year’s monumental programme—culminating in the record-breaking parachute display—will surpass all previous celebrations, leaving the entire nation awash with pride, patriotism, and the enduring legacy of independence.
