US forces strike Islamic State group in Syria

Express Report

U.S. forces conducted airstrikes against multiple Islamic State group sites in Syria, the military announced Saturday, as allied Israel confronts other militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon.

According to a statement from U.S. Central Command on X, the airstrikes took place in the early morning hours of October 11.

"The strikes will disrupt ISIS's ability to plan, organize, and execute attacks against the United States, its allies, partners, and civilians throughout the region and beyond," the statement read.

Currently, the U.S. military has approximately 900 troops stationed in Syria as part of the international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) group, which was formed in 2014 to combat the armed organization that had seized significant territories in Iraq and Syria.

Anti-IS coalition forces have faced numerous drone and rocket attacks in both Iraq and Syria, as violence linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza has prompted militant activity across the Middle East, including from Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

U.S. forces have conducted several retaliatory strikes against militant factions in Iraq and Syria. In September, they carried out two separate strikes in Syria, resulting in the deaths of 37 "terrorist operatives," including members of ISIS and the Al-Qaeda affiliate Hurras al-Din.

U.S. Central Command stated that damage assessments from the recent strikes are ongoing and "do not indicate civilian casualties."
