US President Donald Trump threatened Russia "and other participating countries" with taxes, tariffs, and sanctions if a deal to end the war in Ukraine is not reached promptly.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump on Wednesday stated, "Without a deal, I will have no choice but to impose high levels of taxes, tariffs, and sanctions on anything sold by Russia to the United States and other participating countries."
Trump did not specify which countries he regarded as participants in the conflict.
Donald Trump’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war has been notably unconventional, emphasizing his desire for a swift resolution through negotiation rather than prolonged military engagement.
Before the election, Trump repeatedly criticised the U.S. policy, advocating for a more isolationist approach. He announced that, if re-elected, he would broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, promising to bring both sides to the negotiating table.
Trump’s rhetoric often focuses on his ability to leverage the U.S.'s economic power, warning Russia and its allies of severe sanctions, including taxes and tariffs on Russian goods, should the war continue without a resolution. While his critics accuse him of downplaying Russia’s aggressive actions, Trump maintains that the war, and the resulting global economic instability, could have been avoided through stronger diplomacy.
His approach underscores his broader "America First" foreign policy philosophy, which prioritizes national interest over international involvement, even if it risks alienating traditional allies. Trump's views on the conflict are framed by his broader skepticism of U.S. military intervention abroad, advocating for more self-sufficiency and reduced foreign entanglements.
