Dr Kamal Hossain, Emeritus President of Gono Forum, has urged all political and civic forces to carefully preserve the unity forged during the July Uprising, warning that such a hard-earned consensus must not be allowed to unravel.
He made the remarks on Monday evening while addressing a memorial meeting in Dhaka in honour of the late Gono Forum President Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
“A national unity has emerged among students, citizens, and political parties through the anti-fascist movement of July and August,” Kamal said. “That youthful energy must now be harnessed to rebuild the nation. Everyone must remain vigilant so this unity is not destroyed—we must protect and nurture it.”
Reflecting on the broader implications of the recent mass mobilisation, Kamal said the uprising had ignited widespread public demand for reform across key state institutions. “There is no room for delay,” he said. “The interim government must act decisively to meet the expectations of the people.”
Kamal also paid tribute to Montu’s lifelong commitment to democracy and anti-corruption efforts, calling his political legacy “exemplary”.
The memorial event was organised by Gono Forum at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB). Montu, who passed away on 15 June at Square Hospital, was a guerrilla commander during the Liberation War and a former Member of Parliament for Dhaka-3.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also spoke at the event, recalling Montu’s unwavering dedication to democratic principles and the spirit of the Liberation War.
“My strongest memories of him are tied to his firm stance on national sovereignty and democracy,” Fakhrul said. “His passing is a deep loss for all of us who are striving for democracy. But his legacy endures, and it will inspire generations of political activists. Montu’s soul will find peace when democracy is fully restored in Bangladesh.”
