Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, paid a courtesy call on Information and Broadcasting Adviser Md Mahfuz Alam at the ministry Tuesday, reports BSS.

During the meeting, the Adviser said the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is working to formulate the Journalism Rights Protection Ordinance based on the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission.

Commenting on the upcoming national parliamentary election, he said the government would extend all-out cooperation to ensure that the media can function independently. "At present, there is no government interference in the media. The government expects a neutral and responsible role from the media," he added.

Discussion also took place about the activities of the Bangladesh Press Council, the ministry's initiatives for journalist training, and measures to counter rumors and misinformation.

UNESCO plays a vital role in Bangladesh, supporting the country’s development through education, culture, science, and communication initiatives. In education, UNESCO works closely with the government to enhance literacy, improve quality of schooling, and promote inclusive education, particularly for marginalized groups. Through its cultural programs, the organization helps preserve Bangladesh’s rich heritage, including historic sites, traditional crafts, and intangible cultural practices such as folk music and festivals.

UNESCO also promotes scientific collaboration and capacity-building, supporting research in areas like climate change, biodiversity, and disaster risk reduction, which are critical for a country highly vulnerable to environmental challenges. In the field of communication and information, UNESCO advocates for press freedom, media development, and the use of digital technologies to foster informed citizenry and access to knowledge.

The organization actively engages with local institutions, policymakers, and civil society to implement sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly in areas like quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), and climate action (SDG 13). By bridging global expertise and local needs,

UNESCO contributes to building Bangladesh’s resilience, social equity, and cultural preservation, playing a strategic role in shaping inclusive and sustainable growth across multiple sectors.
