Rajshahi University (RU) on Tuesday celebrated World Statistics Day and National Statistics Day 2025 on its campus, highlighting the vital role of accurate data in national planning and sustainable development.
Marking the occasion, the university brought out a colourful rally that paraded several campus roads before concluding in front of the Third Science Building. The event was followed by a discussion at the Department of Statistics conference hall.
This year’s theme — “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone” — underscores the importance of reliable and inclusive data in shaping effective policies and achieving sustainable progress.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Saleh Hassan Naquib attended the discussion as the chief guest, while Pro-VCs Professor Mayeen Uddin and Professor Farid Uddin Khan were present as special guests. Professor Rejaul Karim, Chairman of the Department of Statistics, presided over the programme.
Professors Monsur Rahman, Aminul Haque, Sabiruzzaman and Farhana Hassan also spoke, sharing insights on the theme and the growing importance of data in policy formulation.
In his address, VC Professor Naquib said flawless data is fundamental to sound development planning and effective governance. “No nation can progress without statistics. Future planning and national advancement depend on the availability of accurate data,” he said.
He stressed that reliable statistics are essential to confronting challenges such as global pandemics, economic instability, and climate-induced disasters. “Accurate data forms the foundation of progress, while inaccurate data can lead to misguided policies and severe consequences,” he added.
The VC urged statisticians, researchers, and relevant authorities to ensure transparency, accuracy, and professionalism in data collection and analysis. “The credibility of census and survey findings depends on the integrity and competence of those involved,” he said.
Emphasising collaboration among government agencies, academia, and research institutions, Professor Naquib called for a nationwide effort to strengthen statistical systems. “Quality statistics are not just numbers—they are the roadmap to the nation’s future,” he concluded.
