
Bangladesh will observe a day of national mourning on Saturday in honour of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who passed away in Singapore after being critically injured in a shooting in Dhaka last week.
The interim government has declared state mourning on Saturday over Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi’s death, who was shot in the head by assailants.
In a televised address to the nation on Thursday, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said the state will bear all responsibilities for the wife and child of Hadi, who died in Singaporeon Thursday night.
He urged citizens not to take “rash decisions”, and requested them to show restraint in their actions.
Hadi, a prominent political activist and convenor of the Inqilab Moncho, was shot at close range while travelling in a rickshaw in Bijoynagar, Dhaka, on 12 December. Two men on a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene, leaving him critically wounded. He was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College and Evercare hospitals before being transferred to Singapore for advanced care.
Following his death, political leaders and organisations expressed deep grief and condemned the attack, describing it as a deliberate act of political violence. BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, among others, called for immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Hadi played a key role during the July Uprising and had been preparing to contest the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election. Authorities have urged the public to participate in the mourning and pay tribute to his contribution to political activism and democratic values.
