A street in the US state of Michigan has been named after late Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the BNP.

The Carpenter Street, located in the heart of Hamtramck City, will now be known by the name of Begum Khaleda Zia.

The information was disclosed in a post issued by the BNP Media Cell today.

According to the post, expatriate Bangladeshis are viewing the decision of the city authorities as a unique recognition of Bangladesh's history, leadership and democracy.

The proposal to rename the section of Carpenter Street between Joseph Campau Avenue and Conant Street after Begum Khaleda Zia was recently approved by the City Council.

Currently, four councilors of Bangladeshi origin are serving on the Hamtramck City Council, whose efforts were instrumental in making the naming possible.

Members of the expatriate community said this is not merely a new identity for a street, but an international testament to Bangladesh's political struggle on the global stage.

This is not the first time a street in the United States has been named after a Bangladeshi leader. 

Previously, a street in Chicago was named after Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. With the addition of a street named after Khaleda Zia in Michigan, an inseparable chapter of Bangladesh's political history has now taken permanent form on American soil.
