Free polls — the first step to restoring people’s rights: Tarique Rahman

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today accused former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s “fascist” government of committing “mega corruption in the name of mega development,” claiming it had destroyed every sector from health to education.

“Bangladesh must be rebuilt from the ground up,” he told the biennial council of Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP, held after nearly 15 years beside the central Eidgah in Pathanpara, Rajshahi city.

He said the autocratic government, which has now fled the country, had looted public wealth, unlawfully imprisoned opposition leaders and activists, and subjected them to torture and killings during its more than 15 years in power. “Not only BNP members, but also other parties who resisted the regime were unjustly persecuted,” he added.

Tarique welcomed the interim government’s announcement that a national election would be held before the upcoming Ramadan, calling it “the first step towards realising the people’s rights.”

Highlighting BNP’s long-standing reform vision, he noted that many proposals of the interim government’s newly formed reform commission echoed BNP’s 31-point state reform agenda unveiled two and a half years ago.

“If Bangladesh is to move forward and people’s lives are to improve, we must overhaul the state’s institutions,” he said, pledging that a BNP-led government would undertake comprehensive reforms covering the electoral system, judiciary, economy, health, education, and law enforcement.

Addressing party leaders and activists, he said the public now looked to the BNP as the only force capable of rebuilding the country. He stressed that winning the election was not enough — the real challenge lay in reconstruction. “Today we take two pledges: to remain united, InshaAllah, and to rebuild the nation by earning the people’s trust,” he declared.

Turning to environmental concerns, Tarique warned of the devastating impact of the Farakka barrage on Rajshahi’s agriculture and ecology. “The Padma River is drying up, fertile lands are turning into deserts, and we must be ready to take this issue to the international court and the United Nations to secure our rightful share of water,” he said.

The conference was chaired by Rajshahi city BNP convener and freedom fighter Ershad Ali, with member secretary Mamun-ur-Rashid moderating. Speakers included BNP Chairperson’s advisers and senior party leaders Abdus Salam, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, Shafiqul Haque Milan, Syed Shaheen Shawkat, Obaidur Rahman Chandan, and Abu Saeed Chand, among others.
