Tarique Rahman Urges BNP Unity to Overcome Conspiracies Threatening Democracy

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday called on party leaders and activists to remain united and maintain public trust by avoiding any wrongdoing amid alleged conspiracies aimed at derailing the restoration of democracy and people’s voting rights.

“The BNP’s vision is to advance the country and improve living standards, but conspiracies are being hatched to block these efforts. Attempts are underway to halt the return to democracy and deny people their right to vote,” he said.

Speaking virtually at the BNP Naogaon District Council’s biennial session, Tarique reminded members that shortly after the fall of the autocratic regime, he warned the upcoming national election would be the toughest in Bangladesh’s history.

“A year ago, I spoke of invisible forces and ongoing plots. Now many realise perhaps I was not mistaken,” he added.

He emphasized that the party can successfully lead the nation and overcome challenges if every member commits to two principles: maintaining the trust and love of the people and avoiding actions that damage the party’s image. “If you do this and stay united like a family, we can foil the conspiracies,” he said.

Tarique stressed that a political party’s greatest asset is the people’s support and urged leaders and activists to never do anything that could harm the party’s popularity or reputation.

He also called on party members to monitor one another to ensure no one engages in activities that could damage the party.

Recalling past struggles, Tarique highlighted the sacrifices of BNP activists under previous regimes — false cases, arrests, torture, and even deaths while in custody. “Some were handcuffed even at their parents’ funerals. We are the heirs of such sacrifices, so we must protect the party’s image and the people’s trust,” he said.

Warning against opportunists he termed “ghughu” (pigeons), Tarique said these individuals only appear when the party nears power, exploiting it for personal gain before disappearing in difficult times. “Be vigilant against them,” he urged.

Tarique called on all BNP members to unite like brothers and sisters to defeat conspiracies, safeguard people’s rights, restore democracy, and implement the party’s 31-point plan for national development.

“Unity is non-negotiable. I urge you to take an oath in Allah’s name that we will remain united,” he said.

He encouraged Naogaon BNP leaders to work together in selecting new leadership through the council, urging the choice of leaders who will carry the party forward with honesty, courage, and dedication.

“Today you made two promises — to stay united and to protect people’s trust. Please honour them,” he added.

Tarique said the BNP has comprehensive plans for the country’s progress and welfare, emphasizing that the party does politics for the people.

He noted that ordinary citizens often approach BNP leaders seeking clarity on the country’s situation and future plans.

Tarique praised the party’s consistent support for people during crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters.

He also pointed out that while reforms are now being discussed by the interim government, BNP had proposed a 31-point reform plan over two years ago during the autocratic regime’s rule.

Drawing on their governance experience, Tarique said the BNP and like-minded parties crafted these proposals to rebuild institutions and sectors damaged by the fascist regime’s self-serving policies.
