National Citizen Party (NCP) chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary has rejected the prospect of a general election being held in February next year, saying it cannot proceed while crucial reforms remain unfinished.
Speaking at an event at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in Dhaka’s Farmgate on Tuesday, Nasiruddin openly challenged the official election schedule, calling the proposed timeline “unrealistic.”
His remarks came in the presence of BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie and Jamaat-e-Islami deputy chief Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
The NCP has maintained that the next polls must be held only after comprehensive political and electoral reforms are implemented in line with the spirit of the July Uprising. The party insists on measures to ensure a truly level playing field, neutral election-time governance, and justice for those killed or injured during the recent political unrest.
Nasiruddin warned that the election would not move forward unless these core demands were met through substantive reforms.
“If the election is forced in February, this government will have to return the bodies of my martyred brothers, those who shed their blood for reforms,” he said. “They must return the hands that were severed, the sons taken from their mothers. If not, there will be no election.”
According to the NCP, rushing to the polls without addressing these issues would only perpetuate political instability and betray the sacrifices made by the people during the uprising.
