The Anti-Corruption Commission has filed two separate cases against Munshiganj’s Sreenagar Shologhar Union Parishad Chairman Md Azizul Islam and his wife Maya Islam over allegedly acquiring Tk 470 million in unexplained assets.
On Wednesday, Hafizul Islam, deputy director of ACC’s Dhaka Coordinated District Office, lodged the cases, the graft agency’s Public Relations Deputy Director Aktarul Islam confirmed.
According to the chargesheets, Azizul, elected UP chairman in 2016, had been involved in importing goods from abroad and wholesale and retail trading before his election. He and his wife own multiple business enterprises.
For the 2023–24 fiscal year, Azizul reportedly holds immovable assets worth Tk 342.6 million and movable assets of Tk 98.3 million, totalling Tk 440.95 million.
Compared with his declared income and savings, his expenditures exceeded Tk 1.78 billion. Excluding bank loans, his unexplained wealth stands at Tk 357.7 million.
For Maya Islam, the chargesheet records immovable assets of Tk 113.1 million and movable assets of Tk 12.03 million, totalling Tk 125.15 million.
Her expenditures exceed declared income by Tk 288.3 million, with unexplained assets amounting to Tk 117.7 million after accounting for bank loans.
The ACC alleges the couple channelled these assets through themselves, each other, their children, and various business entities.
