JaSaD Warns: Equating Bangabandhu with Hasina Risks Masking ‘Fascist’ Forces

Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSaD) has warned that equating independence architect Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with what it calls “fascist” Sheikh Hasina would risk allowing “fascism” to slip into the shadows.

The party’s General Secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan sounded the warning during a discussion held on Friday to mark the 50th death anniversary of Bangabandhu.

The discussion followed a tribute to the Bangabandhu at JaSaD’s central office in Dhaka.

Prodhan, who fought in the 1971 war of independence from Pakistan, said: “Sheikh Mujib was the architect of the Liberation War —this is an undeniable historical truth. Even before returning to the country after independence, he took a clear position on sending back Indian troops stationed in Bangladesh, and ensured that it was implemented.

“While his governance after independence has been subject to debate and criticism, he and his family paid for his mistakes with their brutal deaths. Bangabandhu must be judged in the light of his entire life and struggle.

“As long as Bangladesh exists, Bangabandhu will remain, and so will ‘Joy Bangla’. If Bangabandhu and the fascist Hasina are weighed on the same scale, it will allow fascism to slip into the shadows.”

Bangabandhu’s eldest daughter, former prime minister Hasina, has fled to India while being accused of authoritarianism and orchestrating the deaths of hundreds of protesters.

Her trial for crimes against humanity is under way at the International Crimes Tribunal.

The activities Awami League, established by Bangabandhu, have been banned since the shift in government following the July Uprising.

Six months after Hasina’s fleeing, Bangabandhu’s house at Dhanmondi 32 had been demolished with bulldozers.

To prevent the “banned” Awami League from creating any disorder on Aug 15, police closed all entrances to the site.

Through these restrictions, Bangladesh JaSaD paid tribute to the Bangabandhu at its temporary office on Topkhana Road, despite being the strongest opposition to Bangabandhu’s government in post-Liberation War Bangladesh.

JaSaD Standing Committee member Mushtuq Husain said, “Those who try to diminish Bangabandhu’s role in the Liberation War and distort history are essentially creating space for fascist forces to return to politics, they are the same people who conspire to sabotage the July 2024 Uprising.”

He added, “Today, we have to guard the empty site of Bangabandhu’s at Dhanmondi 32. We strongly condemn the demolition of Dhanmondi 32.”
