“Let Every Girl Dream Freely,” Tarique Rahman Declares

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has painted a vision of a Bangladesh where every girl can grow up with the same freedom, opportunity, and safety that every parent dreams of for their child.

“Let’s celebrate every girl’s right to dream, to learn, to lead, and to live in dignity,” he wrote Saturday in a Facebook post marking the International Day of the Girl Child.

“As a father to a daughter, I understand that empowering girls is not just policy—it’s personal,” he added.

Highlighting the party’s legacy, Tarique said BNP governments have consistently worked to transform the lives of women and girls, and vowed to do even more if entrusted with the responsibility.

“President Ziaur Rahman transformed the garment sector into more than just an industry,” he said. “Millions of women gained formal employment, income, respect, and independence. It was under his leadership that the Ministry of Women’s Affairs was created, institutionalising efforts to improve the lives of girls and women across Bangladesh.”

He also recalled the era of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, under whom education for girls became a right rather than a privilege. “Education was made free up to Class 10, while initiatives such as ‘Food for Education’ and ‘Cash for Education’ helped millions of girls stay in school—shaping family futures, strengthening communities, and nurturing a generation of empowered women,” Tarique said.

Tarique highlighted the groundbreaking Female Secondary School Assistance Project, the first initiative in Bangladesh to achieve gender parity in secondary education. “This program significantly reduced child marriages and became a global model for girls’ education and empowerment, later adopted by other developing nations,” he added.

Looking ahead, the BNP acting chief outlined the party’s plans to continue supporting girls and women through initiatives such as women-led family cards, small business loans and entrepreneurship training, better access to education and job skills, stronger representation in leadership roles, enhanced protections for rights and dignity, and broader support for families and communities.
