Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has reaffirmed the interim government’s firm commitment to holding a free, fair, and impartial national election in February, urging all active political parties to cooperate in ensuring a peaceful and festive electoral environment.

“You can be assured of our neutrality. We have already taken several measures to ensure a credible election, and you will see many more initiatives in the days ahead,” Prof Yunus told delegations from the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami at separate meetings at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

During the discussions, the Chief Adviser said the interim administration would take “all necessary steps” in coordination with the Election Commission to ensure that the upcoming general election is conducted smoothly and credibly. He also assured the political leaders that he would personally oversee any administrative reshuffles before the polls to maintain neutrality.

Talks on July Charter, Referendum and Trial of July Killings

The meetings also focused on the implementation of the ‘July National Charter’, the proposed referendum, and the roadmap for the trial of the July killings—issues that both parties described as crucial before the polls.

A four-member NCP delegation, led by its Convener Nahid Islam, was the first to meet the Chief Adviser. The delegation included Sarjis Alam, Samanta Sharmin, and Khaled Saifullah.
Later, a Jamaat delegation led by its Naib-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Taher held a separate meeting. Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Parwar and Assistant Secretaries General ATM Masum and Rafiqul Islam Khan accompanied him.

Planning Adviser Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, and Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan were present at both meetings on behalf of the interim government.

NCP for Clear Roadmap on July Killings

NCP Convener Nahid Islam urged the government to provide a clear roadmap for the trial of the July killings and guarantee implementation of the July Charter before the election.

“The government must take firm steps in this regard,” he said.

In response, Prof Yunus urged the NCP to sign the July Charter, calling it “a valuable asset for the nation” and stressing that “everyone’s participation is important.” He informed the delegation that the National Consensus Commission was actively working on mechanisms to implement the Charter.

Nahid said the NCP had already written to the Commission seeking discussions with its legal experts on the process.

Jamaat Demands Referendum Before Election

At the subsequent meeting, Jamaat leaders demanded a referendum on the July Charter before the national election, arguing that the issues it addresses are directly linked to the polls.

“A referendum before the election is essential,” said Dr Abdullah Muhammad Taher. “If it is held on the same day as the national election, the voting process could be prolonged.”

The Jamaat delegation also expressed full confidence in the Chief Adviser’s leadership and his pledge to ensure the neutrality of the election administration.

Prof Yunus reiterated that all necessary steps would be taken in close coordination with the Election Commission to uphold fairness and transparency throughout the electoral process.
