A special meeting of the Council of Advisers on Saturday offered prayers for the swift recovery of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, who remains critically ill and under intensive care.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at his office in the Tejgaon area of Dhaka. Religious Affairs Adviser AFM Khalid Hossain led the doa, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, as council members joined in prayers for the ailing political leader.
During the session, the council gave in-principle and final approval to the draft of the Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. The amendment introduces changes to multiple sections of the current law, aiming to simplify NGO registration procedures and ease conditions for the release of foreign grants. Under the revised framework, donations of up to Taka 50 lakh per year will no longer require prior approval, making the law more stakeholder-friendly.
The council also reviewed the draft of the Police Commission Ordinance, 2025. Members instructed that the draft be submitted again in the next meeting in a more detailed and revised form to ensure thorough scrutiny before finalisation.
In another update, Expatriates’ Welfare Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul informed the council that the remaining 24 individuals detained in the United Arab Emirates on allegations of involvement in the July mass uprising will soon be released. He said the detainees are expected to return to Bangladesh within two to three days, bringing relief to their families and communities.
The meeting reflected the council’s dual focus: offering prayers and moral support for Khaleda Zia, while also progressing with legislative matters and the repatriation of expatriates, signalling a continued commitment to both national governance and humanitarian concerns.
