Sharif Osman Hadi No More

Express Report
  19 Dec 2025, 01:49

After battling for his life for six agonising days, Sharif Osman bin Hadi, spokesperson and convenor of Inqilab Moncho and a prominent face of the July Uprising, passed away on Thursday night while undergoing advanced medical treatment in Singapore. He was critically injured after being shot in Dhaka earlier this month.

Inqilab Moncho first announced his death in a Facebook post at around 9:40 pm, stating that Hadi had been accepted as a martyr in what it described as the struggle against hegemony. He was officially pronounced dead at 9:45 pm, the platform said.

Sharif Osman Hadi, a fiery political organiser and an aspiring independent candidate for the 13th National Parliamentary Election from Dhaka-8, had been in a critical condition since December 12, when assailants opened fire on him at close range in the capital’s Bijoynagar area. He was travelling in a battery-run auto-rickshaw when two men on a motorcycle approached and shot him before fleeing the scene.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital for intensive care before being flown to Singapore for advanced treatment.

On Wednesday night, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, after visiting Hadi in hospital, informed Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus that his condition was “extremely critical”. The following day, Inqilab Moncho said Hadi stood at the crossroads of life and death, adding that his family had consented to emergency surgery. His condition was also discussed at the Advisory Council’s weekly meeting.

Hadi rose to national prominence during the July Uprising and the subsequent movement to ban the Awami League, emerging as a vocal and uncompromising figure in street politics. As convenor of Inqilab Moncho, he consistently spoke out on democratic reform, accountability, and civil rights, positioning the platform outside traditional party politics.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin expressed deep shock and sorrow at Hadi’s death, praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveying sympathy to the bereaved family.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, addressing the nation on Thursday night, described Hadi as a “fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising” and said he received the news of his death directly from Singapore’s foreign minister moments earlier.

“May Almighty Allah accept this immortal soldier of the struggle against fascism and hegemony as a martyr,” the chief adviser said, adding that the government would take responsibility for Hadi’s wife and only child.

As news of his death spread, protests erupted across the country. Supporters and activists gathered at Shahbagh in Dhaka, while demonstrations were also reported on the Dhaka University campus. In Chattogram, protesters staged a sit-in outside the Indian Assistant High Commission late Thursday night, prompting a swift police response.

Traffic at Shahbagh came to a standstill as mourners, students, and activists assembled, demanding justice for the killing.

Meanwhile, an incident of unrest was reported at the Prothom Alo office building in Karwan Bazar shortly after midnight, where arson was allegedly carried out. The Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed receiving a fire alert at 12:28 am and said units were dispatched immediately.

Sharif Osman Hadi’s death has plunged the political arena into mourning, intensifying calls for justice and accountability, as the nation grapples with the loss of a young, outspoken political voice silenced by violence.

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman also expressed deep grief, calling Hadi’s killing a stark reminder of the human cost of political violence. He described him as a courageous activist and a fearless voice against injustice who played a significant role after the July Mass Uprising in defending democratic values and national interests.

“This dedicated young politician’s murder is a calculated political killing. After the fall of the Awami League’s authoritarian rule through the student and public movement, conspirators are shedding blood again to establish misrule,” Tarique Rahman said.

“They are actively attempting to destabilise the country, and the attack on Hadi is an expression of their intent to destroy democracy and sabotage elections,” he said.
