In a first-of-its-kind development in Bangladesh’s political history, four senior political leaders from different parties will accompany Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus to the United States for the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The delegation includes Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Naib-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, and BNP Acting Chairperson’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, held to outline Dr Yunus’s participation in the UN session.
Dr Yunus is scheduled to depart for the United States on September 22 and is expected to address the General Assembly on September 26.
Observers note that the delegation marks an unprecedented instance in Bangladesh where top leaders from ideologically diverse parties are traveling together with the head of the government to an international forum, reflecting the ongoing national consensus process.
The trip comes amid preparations for the country’s next national election, signaling an effort to project political unity and cooperation on the global stage.
Political analysts say the presence of opposition leaders alongside Dr Yunus could strengthen Bangladesh’s diplomatic messaging at the UN while also serving as a symbolic gesture of cross-party collaboration during a period of intense domestic political negotiations.
