The number of containers handled in the New Mooring Terminal (NCT) has hit a new record after surpassing 5,000 TEUs handled in a day.
The new daily record was made after Chittagong Drydock Ltd, a company run by the Bangladesh Navy, took over management of the NCT.
A statement from the dry dock said that 5,019 TEUs of containers were handled in the 24 hours from 8am on Thursday to 8am on Friday.
Among these, 2,101 TEUs are import containers and 2,918 TEUs are export containers.
Chittagong Drydock Ltd took over the NCT from Jul 7 after the contract with Saif Powertec Limited, a private operator that had operated NCT for a long time, ended.
Since Drydock took over, container handling at the NCT of Chittagong Port has increased significantly.
The statement mentioned that container handling in NCT has increased more as the officers and members of the Navy-run organisation efficiently perform their duties at the ship point, delivery point, appraisement point, C&F shed and other gates.
As many as 109,217 TEUs of containers have been handled at NCT berths 2, 3, 4 and 5 from the beginning of this month to Aug 28.
Accordingly, the average daily handling now stands at 3,903 TEUs which is 40 percent higher than before. Authorities claim it to be a milestone in the history of container handling in the port.
A total of 174,931 TEUs of containers were handled at NCT in the 49 days from Jul 7 to Aug 25, after Chittagong Drydock took over.
The previous operator handled 119,276 TEUs of containers in 49 days from May 19 to Jul 6. This means that container handling increased by 46.66 percent in the 49 days after Drydock took over.
Drydock said that there was no alternative to more container handling to speed up the overall operations of the port.
It said the company has set an excellent example in the management of NCT as a port operator, which will stand as a milestone for future operators.
