Gold Drops After Eight Straight Hikes, Marks Biggest Drop of the Year

After eight consecutive price hikes, the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has cut gold prices by over Tk 8,000 per bhori, marking the steepest single-day drop of 2025.

According to a BAJUS press release issued Wednesday night, the price of 22-carat gold fell by Tk 8,386 per bhori (11.664 grams), bringing it down to Tk 2,08,996. The new rates will take effect from Thursday.

The association said the adjustment reflects a fall in the price of pure gold (tejabi gold) in the local market. Under the revised rates, 21-carat gold is priced at Tk 1,99,501 per bhori, 18-carat at Tk 1,70,994 per bhori, and traditional gold at Tk 1,42,219 per bhori.

BAJUS noted that government-fixed 5% VAT and its minimum 6% making charge must be added to the selling price, although making charges may vary depending on jewellery design and craftsmanship.

The association last revised gold prices on October 19, raising 22-carat gold by Tk 1,050 per bhori to a record high of Tk 2,17,382. With Wednesday’s revision, BAJUS has adjusted gold prices 67 times in 2025—48 hikes and 19 cuts.

In global markets, gold prices recorded their steepest daily fall in five years on Tuesday, with investors booking profits after previous gains driven by safe-haven demand and expectations of U.S. interest rate cuts. Spot gold fell 5.5% to a one-week low of $4,115.26 per ounce (01:45 a.m. EDT, 1745 GMT), marking the sharpest drop since August 2020.

Gold and silver futures opened lower on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) Wednesday, October 22, as easing U.S.-China trade tensions prompted investors to take profits.
