Police have arrested four individuals in connection with the brutal killing of scrap trader Md Sohag, alias Lal Chand, outside Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka—a daylight murder that triggered widespread outrage after graphic video footage circulated on social media.
The BNP, facing growing scrutiny over the suspects’ political affiliations, has expelled five members of its affiliated wings believed to be involved in the killing.
A shocking daylight murder near Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka has left the city reeling, as chilling CCTV footage surfaced on social media showing a group of men savagely attacking a lifeless body in full public view—allegedly over a turf war in the scrap copper and metal trade.
The victim, identified as Chand Mia alias Sohag, a local trader, was brutally beaten and hacked to death inside the hospital compound just before sundown on Thursday.
The footage, now widely circulated online, shows the attackers dragging Sohag’s bloodied body onto a nearby road before continuing their assault with horrifying cruelty—stomping on his chest and punching his face as bystanders looked on in stunned silence. Despite the proximity of hospital staff, security personnel, and even an Ansar camp, no one attempted to intervene.
Sohag was rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Eyewitnesses described the attack as chilling and merciless. “The attackers seemed to take pride in what they were doing. They stood over the body like they had claimed victory,” one local said.
According to police and locals, the murder is believed to be linked to a conflict over control of a lucrative scrap metal syndicate in the Mitford area, where Sohag reportedly held considerable influence.
Sohag’s sister, Manjuara Begum, filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station, naming 15–20 individuals, including known local criminals such as Mohin, Titu, Nannu, Sarwar Hossain, Riyad, and Rakib.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Lalbagh Division has launched a full-scale investigation.
“We are treating this case with the utmost urgency and are committed to bringing every perpetrator to justice,” said Aminul Kabir Tarafdar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Lalbagh Division.
The victim Sohag, a prominent figure in the local used cable trade, was attacked on Wednesday afternoon near Gate No. 3 of Mitford Hospital. Video clips showed assailants crushing his head and body with a concrete boulder, leaving him dead on the spot.

Police and locals say the attack stemmed from a business dispute. Sohag reportedly controlled a lucrative scrap syndicate in the area, and the suspects—some of whom were his former associates—were allegedly trying to take over his operations.
A local electronics trader familiar with the rivalry said, “They locked up Sohag’s warehouse, which sparked repeated confrontations. Most of them were linked to the Jubo Dal, as was Sohag in the past.”
A joint task force arrested Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, 41, and Tarek Rahman Robin, 22, while the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two others. Police recovered a foreign-made pistol from Robin during his arrest. A Dhaka court has granted police five days to interrogate Mohin and Robin in custody.
Sohag’s elder sister filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. Investigators have already collected CCTV footage from the scene and launched a manhunt for the remaining accused.
Among the 19 named in the police case, two are central or city-level leaders of the BNP’s youth wing Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal. Two others are members of its student wing Chhatra Dal, and one belongs to the Swechchhasebak Dal, the party’s volunteer wing.
In response, BNP central committee member Salahuddin Ahmed announced on Friday that all five party members allegedly involved in the killing have been expelled with immediate effect.
Lalbagh Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Mofizul Islam told reporters, “Many people are asking why this happened. I still don’t have an answer.”
According to a statement from Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the killing was primarily driven by business rivalry and personal animosity. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the plot and arrest the remaining suspects.
