Dhaka police have arrested Kazi Md Mamunur Rashid, secretary general of the Raushon Ershad-led faction of the Jatiya Party, alleging that he was acting as an associate of Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, detained earlier for “suspicious movement” near Minto Road.
Police said in a remand petition submitted on Monday that Mamunur had received Enayet at Dhaka airport, arranged his accommodation, covered his expenses, and acted as his local associate. Mamunur was apprehended near The Westin Dhaka on Sunday by detectives.
The DB Ramna Zonal Team, led by Inspector Akhtar Morshed, sought 10 days’ custody to interrogate Mamunur at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque.
The petition claims that Mamunur, along with Enayet and other unnamed suspects, allegedly orchestrated actions that “created panic among the public” and threatened Bangladesh’s integrity, solidarity, public safety, and sovereignty. Investigators assert that evidence points to efforts to destabilise the current government through secret meetings with political leaders, influential business figures, and representatives of various parties.
The application also alleges involvement in planning mass protests intended to damage state property, and said investigators are probing whether Mamunur, in collusion with Enayet and other fugitives, secretly engaged with political groups—registered or unregistered—to undermine Bangladesh’s political, economic, and social stability on behalf of a foreign power.
Enayet, who obtained US citizenship in 2004 after moving there in 1988, was detained on September 13 while “moving suspiciously” in a Prado SUV near Minto Road. Police seized two iPhones and later filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Ramna Model Police Station. He has been interrogated twice on a seven-day remand.
According to the investigation, Enayet allegedly entered Bangladesh from New York on September 6 as an “agent of a foreign intelligence agency” with the aim of destabilising the interim government. Mamunur has been placed in six-day custody for questioning, with authorities seeking to clarify the full scope of his involvement.
