Dhaka Cantonment Building Turned Temporary Prison

The interim government has temporarily declared a building in the Dhaka Cantonment as a prison.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Sunday.

The notice, signed by Deputy Secretary of the Security Services Division Md Hafiz Al Asad, said that under the powers of Section 541(1) of the Bangladesh Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898 and Section 3(B) of The Prisons Act, 1894 (IX of 1894), the “MES” Building No. 54, located on the north side of Bashar Road in the Dhaka Cantonment, has been temporarily declared as a prison.

The announcement has been issued with the approval of the appropriate authorities and will take effect immediately, the notice said.

The Army has recently taken 15 officers into custody following arrest warrants issued by the International Crimes Tribunal.

The notification did not provide any details about who would be housed in the jail.

"We received the GO today. Our people will be assigned there very soon," said Jannat-ul-Farhad, the assistant inspector general of prisons at the Department of Prisons, Dhaka.
