Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has reported 279 new dengue hospitalisations across the country over the past 24 hours, raising this year’s tally to 37,206.

According to data released by the DGHS on Saturday, two more people have died from the disease over the last 24 hours, taking the tally of deaths to 147 this year.

Among the newly admitted patients, the highest number, 97, is from the two city corporation areas of Dhaka. In the Dhaka Division, 42 have been admitted, nine in Mymensingh, 84 in Chittagong, two in Khulna, and 45 in Barishal.

According to the health directorate, 1,722 people are undergoing treatment in different hospitals across the country for dengue. Of these, 720 are in different hospitals in Dhaka, and 1,002 are admitted to hospitals outside Dhaka.

However, many people who contract the disease do not get hospitalised. As a result, the true number of infections nationwide remains unknown.

Bangladesh recorded its highest annual hospital admissions for dengue in 2023, with 321,179 patients.

In addition, 101,211 patients were admitted to hospitals in 2024, 62,382 in 2022, 28,429 in 2021, 1,405 in 2020, and 101,354 in 2019.

This year, July saw the highest toll with 41 deaths, followed by 39 in August.

Another 19 patients died in June, 10 in January, seven in April, three each in February and May, while no deaths were reported in March. September has seen 25 fatalities until now.

This year, the highest number of dengue patients, 10,684, were admitted to hospitals in July.

Additionally, 1,161 people were admitted to hospitals in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, 1,773 in May, 5,951 in June, and 10,496 in August.

A total of 5,730 patients have been admitted to hospitals as of Sept 13.
