Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said the interim government will ask India to notify Bangladesh, which lies downstream, before opening the dams to release water through shared rivers.

“If there is no agreement, India being an upstream country should still inform us before opening the dams according to international laws. But they did not follow the rule this time,” said the environment and climate change advisor.

She made the comments while visiting the Khowai River Dam in Habiganj Sadar Upazila on Friday.

Her statements came a day after raging debates about India opening the gates of the Dumbur Dam after 31 years to cause the floods in Bangladesh.

“We have to save the Khowai River first to save Habiganj. We will try to figure out how to protect the Khowai River with small funded projects,” she added.
