The UK has announced $27 million in new humanitarian aid to assist over half a million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, reinforcing its long-term commitment to one of the world’s most pressing displacement crises.
The funding, announced during a high-level UN conference on Myanmar, will provide food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and other essential services to Rohingya refugees and vulnerable host communities in Cox’s Bazar and surrounding areas. It will also deliver sexual and reproductive health services to 175,000 women and girls and support survivors of physical, sexual, and mental harm.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the aid would directly improve lives on the ground and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to ensuring displaced people have support, protection, dignity, and opportunities.
Since 2017, the UK has contributed more than $447 million to the Rohingya response, working with multilateral partners like IOM, WFP, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, and international NGOs. Key areas include camp management, education, climate-resilient agriculture, and assistance for persons with disabilities.
UK officials emphasized the importance of sustained international coordination to address the root causes of displacement in Myanmar and ensure continued humanitarian access in Rakhine State.
