As the historic August 5 approaches, political parties that spearheaded the July student-mass movement — which forced former autocratic Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India — are back on the streets, demonstrating unity against any attempts to destabilize the country's hard-earned political stability.
These political activities are expected to disrupt Dhaka’s traffic, prompting authorities to block and divert several key roads.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP, will hold a rally at Shahbagh intersection from 12:00pm to 6:00pm to mark the first anniversary of the July-August uprising. Simultaneously, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, the National Citizen Party (NCP) will organize a public rally at the Shaheed Minar, pressing for the implementation of their "July Declaration and Charter."
Adding to the day’s events, the "July Jagaran" cultural festival by Saimum Shilpigosthi is underway at Suhrawardy Udyan, running daily from August 1 to 4, from 10:00am to 10:00pm.
In light of these multiple events, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a public advisory asking commuters to avoid key roads in the capital today (Sunday) to minimize traffic congestion.
According to a notice signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali, large gatherings are expected around Shahbagh, Shaheed Minar, and Suhrawardy Udyan. Consequently, vehicle movement, especially through Shahbagh intersection, will face severe restrictions.
The DMP also pointed out that Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams, as well as the BCS examination, are scheduled at various centres across Dhaka on the same day.
Given the overlap of political events and crucial exams, DMP has warned of significant traffic disruptions in Shahbagh, Shaheed Minar, and Suhrawardy Udyan areas. Commuters, particularly exam candidates, have been urged to plan their journeys early to avoid delays.
The DMP has also recommended the following alternative routes and diversions:
Suggested Diversion Routes:
Hotel InterContinental Intersection: Vehicles approaching from Sonargaon or Banglamotor crossings should avoid Shahbagh and instead use Hare Road or Minto Road.
Katabon Intersection: Traffic from Science Lab Crossing should bypass Shahbagh by turning towards Nilkhet/Palashi or Sonargaon Road (Hatirpool), and proceed via Banglamotor link road.
Matsya Bhaban Intersection: Vehicles from High Court or Kadam Fountain Crossing should avoid Shahbagh, continuing via Hare Road or Shaheed Captain Monsur Ali Sarani (Moghbazar Road).
Kakrail Mosque Intersection: Vehicles coming from the north should avoid Shahbagh and head towards Gulistan or Dhaka University.
Shaheed Minar Vicinity: Roads adjacent to Shaheed Minar are to be avoided due to heavy pedestrian traffic.
Suhrawardy Udyan Entrances: Commuters should avoid these access points.
The DMP has strongly advised HSC, equivalent, and BCS examinees to leave home well in advance to ensure timely arrival at exam centres.
