Heavy rain has caused waterlogging in some areas of Chattogram city once again, only three days after spells of showers left the port city inundated.
The city saw 64mm of rainfall from 6am to noon on Thursday.
The heavy rain caused waterlogging in the Katalganj, Kapasgola, Agrabad Commercial Area, AK Khan Gate area, Chawkbazar, and other parts of the city. However, the water started receding as the day went on.
Meanwhile, tidal water from the Halda River has risen in the city's Mohra area and has remained there for the past four to five days. The water has yet to recede, forcing residents to cope with the persistent waterlogging.
According to the Ambagan Meteorological Office, 73mm of rain was recorded in the area in the 24 hours to noon on Thursday.
The Patenga Meteorological Office recorded 84mm in the area during the same period. Of this 64mm fell between 6am and noon.
On Tuesday afternoon, Chattogram Mayor Shahadat Hossain visited the site of the box culvert cleaning operation in Agrabad.
“When there was heavy rainfall three days ago, the tide added to it, and the water began to rise,” he had said.
“Even when we recorded 192mm of rainfall in May, we were still in a comfortable situation. But now, due to the addition of the tidal water, we are facing a difficult situation after 102mm of rain (on Jul 28).”
The following day, the mayor said he held a coordination meeting with different agencies on the matter.
“In view of this, I went to Chandgaon, Bahaddarhat, Katalganj, Baklia, Chawkbazar, and Muradpur yesterday. I inquired about the reasons and gave instructions to those involved.”
“We are conducting so many awareness drives, but even after we clean the canals, more garbage is dumped in again. Due to this, we are thinking of successfully restarting the door-to-door project again. No matter how much we clean the canals and drains, garbage from homes eventually becomes a factor.”
Noting that waterlogging has been the main problem of the port city for the last 15-20 years, Shahadat: “A substantial amount of money had previously been allocated to this, but you have not received the desired results. Now, after only seven to eight months, you see the results are unimaginable.”
“There was no waterlogging in various places this time. Once, Bahaddarhat and Muradpur used to be waterlogged. This time, they were not. The water did not rise in Khatunganj, which is a commercial area. What has happened here is due to the tide.”
He said much work remains for the ongoing waterlogging relief mega project.
“That project does not include all the canals of the city. So, 50 percent of the work has been done. There is a lot more work left. Not all the sluice gates have been constructed yet.”
Regarding the waterlogging in the Mohra area, Shahadat said: “The high tidal water in the Halda has caused waterlogging in Mohra this time. The tidal water entered because a sluice gate has not been built there. I have spoken to the Water Development Board.
“They said they will complete work on the sluice gate by January. This will not happen again.”
Patenga Meteorological Office Forecast Officer Abdur Rahman told bdnews24.com, “It will rain tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. However, the intensity of the rain may decrease slightly.”
