Police have recovered the bodies of three members of a family from a flat in Narayanganj.

Of them, the body of the household head, 35-year-old Md Habibullah Shiplu, was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a cloth wrapped around his neck, according to Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi.

The bodies of his wife Mohini Akhter Meem, 24, and their four-year-old son Afran were found on a bed in an adjacent room, with pillows covering their faces, he said.

The law enforcers recovered the bodies from the flat in the city’s Bhuiyapara on Monday around 5pm upon information from locals.

Police officer Mehedi informed that Shiplu and his family lived in a rented flat on the fourth floor. In the afternoon, locals found the door locked from the inside. They later broke open the door with relatives of the deceased present and found the bodies.

"Preliminary assumptions suggest that Shiplu strangled his wife and child before taking his own life," he added.

According to locals and police, Shiplu, a resident of Cumilla’s Daudkandi, grew up in the area. He was the manager of a local cooperative society called “Combined Savings Fund”.

The society's director, Rozman Ali, reportedly fled with the clients' money during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to its closure.

Although Rozman was later arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), he was released on bail and went into hiding. As a result, the society's clients were pressuring Shiplu to return their money.

A woman living in the adjacent flat said, "The family rented this flat four months ago. They had lived in nearby houses before. After the society closed, people who owed money used to cause a lot of trouble. But lately, I haven't seen many people around."

Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station chief Mohammad Nasir Ahmed said, "Shilpu was accused in a case initiated by the clients for not getting their money back. He attended a hearing for that case last week."

Mehedi said, "Since the society closed, he was financially distressed. We suspect that due to financial hardship, he first killed his wife and child, then went to the next room and hanged himself."

The incident will be investigated with serious consideration, he added.
