The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate on Monday condemned the circulation of misleading information on social media, which it described as “deliberate propaganda” distorting a recent statement by the Bangladesh Army Chief.

The ISPR clarified that in his address on September 30, the Army Chief did not mention granting indemnity to anyone accused of disappearances, murders, or other crimes against humanity.

“But a malicious group, including some individuals residing abroad, continues to distort the Army Chief’s statement on social media for dishonest and nefarious purposes,” the statement said. It added that these campaigns aim to create a divide between the patriotic army and the people.

The ISPR emphasized that the Bangladesh Army has consistently fulfilled its duties while remaining committed to the Constitution, the laws of the state, and the people, upholding professionalism and discipline, and will continue to do so.

The directorate termed the ongoing false and misleading social media campaign as intentional and baseless, urging the public to remain vigilant against such disinformation.

The statement also provided context for the Army Chief’s September 30 address. A research report was presented on improving and accelerating the army’s assistance to civil administration under current legal provisions, including deployment challenges and operational procedures.

Discussions focused on law and order management at the field level under magistracy powers granted to the army under CrPC Sections 127–132 (In Aid to Civil Power). The objective was to ensure that field-deployed army personnel understand the applicable laws and perform their duties with professionalism, efficiency, and proper legal and institutional guidance.

During the event, the issue of indemnity under CrPC Section 132 was discussed. The Army Chief highlighted its legal framework and noted its conflict with the International Crimes (Tribunal) Act, 1973 (amended 2024).

The ISPR clarified that army personnel deployed under government orders disperse illegal public gatherings according to the law and require legal protection while performing their duties. The army has already informed the relevant government authorities regarding the matter.
