Hadi Fights for Life: Brain Stem Injury Leaves Him on Ventilator

Express Report

Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for Inquilab Mancha and prospective Dhaka-8 independent candidate, remains in critical condition following a near-fatal shooting in Bijoynagar on Friday, hospital authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Doctors at Evercare Hospital said the bullet caused severe trauma to Hadi’s brain, including his brain stem, and also injured his lungs. He is currently under conservative management, with no surgical intervention being undertaken at this stage, and remains under intensive care observation.

A 14-member medical board, comprising specialists from multiple disciplines, has been formed to oversee his treatment. The team is led by Dr Md Zafar Iqbal, senior consultant of the hospital’s ICU and Critical Care Department.

Evercare Hospital Director of Medical Services, Dr Arif Mahmud, described Hadi’s condition as “extremely critical,” emphasising that medical care remains the hospital’s top priority. “His condition is alarming. A medical board has been formed and treatment is ongoing. At this moment, our focus is entirely on his health rather than media briefings,” he said. Dr Mahmud added that Hadi’s family has been fully informed and that the hospital will cooperate if they decide to seek advanced treatment abroad.

In an official statement, the medical board reported that Hadi’s brain has been “severely damaged” and that he is being treated under a brain protection protocol designed to prevent further neurological deterioration. A follow-up CT scan may be conducted once his physical condition stabilises.

Doctors also confirmed injuries to his lungs. A chest drain tube has been placed, through which a small amount of blood is being discharged. Ventilator support continues under strict precautions to prevent infection and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS).

Hadi’s kidney function has recovered, though careful fluid management remains crucial. A previously developed blood clotting disorder, Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC), is now largely under control, with continuous monitoring and transfusions as required.

The board highlighted that Hadi’s injury to the brain stem makes his condition highly sensitive. Fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate have been observed, with ongoing blood pressure support and readiness to install a temporary pacemaker if necessary.

At present, no new surgical procedures or medical interventions are planned. Treatment continues under an observation-based approach, with all efforts focused on stabilising his vital functions.

The board expressed gratitude to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s One-Stop Crisis Centre, Radiology, ICU, Anaesthesia, Neurosurgery, and other departments for their “exceptional and humane contributions” during the initial phase of treatment.

Authorities urged the public to respect Hadi’s privacy, avoid crowding hospital premises, and refrain from circulating speculative or misleading information.

Hadi was shot by two assailants on a motorcycle while travelling in a rickshaw on Friday afternoon. He was initially admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that evening, where he continues to receive critical care.
