The prosecution at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Sunday called for framing charges against 13 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, over alleged enforced disappearances and torture at the Joint Interrogation Cell (JIC) during the previous Awami League government.

Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam pressed for five specific charges of enforced disappearance and torture against the accused. Three of them—Sheikh Md Sarwar Hossain, Md Mahbubur Rahman Siddiqui, and Ahmed Tanvir Mazhar Siddiqui—were produced before the court during Sunday’s hearing.

At the conclusion of the session, Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mazumder, chairman of the three-judge ICT-1 panel, adjourned the hearing until 9 December, when the defence is scheduled to respond to a discharge petition filed on behalf of the accused.

This follows the tribunal’s earlier move on 8 October, when it took cognisance of charges against 30 individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, in two separate cases over alleged enforced disappearances and torture carried out at the Taskforce for Interrogation (TFI) Cell and the JIC during the Awami League’s tenure.

The prosecution has pressed five charges against 13 people, including Sheikh Hasina and her former security and defence adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique, relating to crimes at the JIC. The remaining accused in this case are Md Akbar Hossain, Md Saiful Abedin, Md Saiful Alam, Md Tabrej Shams Chowdhury, Hamidul Haque, Mohammad Touhidul Islam, Kabir Ahammed, and Mokhchurul Haque.

In a parallel case concerning the TFI Cell, the prosecution has brought five charges against 17 individuals, again including Sheikh Hasina and Tarique Ahmed Siddique. Other accused in this case are Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Benazir Ahmed, M Khurshid Hossain, Barrister Md Harun Ur Rashid, Anwar Latif Khan, Md Jahangir Alam, Tofayel Mostafa Sarwar, KM Azad, Md Qamrul Hasan, Md Mahabub Alam, Abdullah Al Momen, Md Sarwar Bin Qashem, Md Khairul Islam, Md Moshiur Rahman Jewel, and Saiful Islam Suman.

The ICT hearings are set to resume on 9 December, with the defence expected to present its arguments on the discharge petitions, potentially setting the stage for the next critical phase in this high-profile tribunal case.
