Without Media, Democracy Cannot Survive: BNP Advisory Council Member Dr. Ziauddin Haider

Dr. Ziauddin Haider, Advisory Council Member to the BNP Chairman, emphasized that ensuring the safety and rights of journalists is essential to sustaining democracy in the country. He stated that all journalist murder cases, including the Sagar-Runi killings, will be addressed under the Speedy Trial Act, and journalists at district and upazila levels will be guaranteed salaries and allowances according to the Ninth Wage Board.

He made the remarks at an exchange meeting with journalists at the Kathalia Press Club in Jhalkathi on Wednesday night at 9 p.m.

Dr. Haider said, “Without media, democracy cannot survive. Journalists are the fourth pillar of the state. If BNP assumes the responsibility of governance, it will ensure journalists’ safety and establish their rights.”

He further added, “BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has instructed identifying journalists’ problems. Based on that directive, a comprehensive plan is being prepared.”

The meeting was chaired by Kathalia Press Club President Md. Masudul Alam. General Secretary Md. Akkas Sikdar and Md. Shahidul Alam also spoke, emphasizing that safeguarding journalists’ rights and ensuring their safety is the demand of the time.

BNP nomination aspirants from Jhalkathi-1 constituency Md. Golam Azam Soikat, Colonel Mostafizur Rahman, Barrister Moin Firozi, Md. Rafik Howlader, and other local party leaders were also present.

After the meeting, Dr. Haider visited various Puja mandaps and temples in the upazila. Later, at 10:30 p.m., he attended another exchange meeting with journalists at the Rajapur Press Club, chaired by Press Club President Md. Moniruzzaman Khan.
