BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday night condemned the killing of Bagerhat journalist SM Hayat Uddin, saying that a group of miscreants are once again trying to create instability and anarchy in the country for their own benefit.
“After the fall of the Awami autocratic regime through the student-led movement, miscreants have once again engaged in evil attempts to create instability and anarchy in the country for their own gains,” he said.
In a condolence message, Fakhrul said the brutal and barbaric killing of journalist SM Hayat Uddin in an attack by the miscreants is a cruel reflection of that conspiracy.
He said SM Hayat Uddin, a member of Bagerhat Municipal BNP and a journalist of Bhorer Chetana newspaper, was murdered by miscreants near his home at Harikhali under Bagerhat municipality on 3 October.
As a journalist, the BNP secretary general said, Hayat was killed by the criminals for speaking the truth.
“Such horrific incidents are being repeated again and again to put the interim government in difficulty,” he said.
Fakhrul said there is no alternative to bringing these criminals to justice and curbing them with a firm hand.
“To protect democracy and people’s right to vote, and to safeguard the lives and property of the nation, people of all walks of life and professions must stand united regardless of party or opinion. Otherwise, the associates of the Awami fascists, lying in wait, will try to rise again and endanger the country’s existence,” he said.
Fakhrul strongly demanded the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those involved in the murder.
He also prayed for the salvation of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathy to the bereaved family members.
