Salahuddin Warns Attempts to Divide BNP and July Uprising Will Fail

BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday warned that no effort to portray the party against the July 2024 uprising would succeed.

“It would be wrong to think that a fascist ruler was toppled in just 36 days. This victory was the result of 16 years of continuous struggle and sacrifice. Any attempt to pit the BNP against the July uprising will never succeed,” he said while speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office.

Salahuddin stressed that the student-led uprising was not the achievement of a single party, but the culmination of long-term struggles by all forces opposed to fascism. “So far, 422 of our leaders and activists embraced martyrdom during the uprising. Their names and photos have been published, and the number may rise,” he added.

He highlighted the sacrifices of BNP members over 16 years as central to the uprising’s success, but also acknowledged the contributions of other democratic forces. “The brutal massacre at Shapla Chattar was among the rarest atrocities in the world. It was not the work of any single political party,” he said.

Addressing recent fire incidents at key locations across the country, Salahuddin said it was too early to draw conclusions. “Investigations are ongoing, and we should wait for the findings. Some incidents may be linked, and certain quarters may be trying to create instability, but nothing can be confirmed yet,” he said.

On the upcoming national election in February, Salahuddin said there was broad agreement among political parties to hold the polls on schedule. “Has any party opposed elections in February? Everyone has supported holding them in the first half of the month. There is no reason for doubt,” he added.

He also spoke on the debate over proportional representation (PR), describing it as a legitimate democratic practice. “This is the kind of democracy for which we have sacrificed and given our lives,” he said.

Clarifying a recent media misrepresentation, Salahuddin said, “My statement regarding the ‘July Fighters’ was truncated and aired partially. I urge everyone not to circulate the shortened version. My intention was to honour the July Fighters, not criticize them. They are our strength, and no one should tarnish their honour.”

Commenting on the disorder at the July National Charter signing ceremony on Friday, he said some unruly individuals caused chaos, but the July Fighters were not responsible. He welcomed calls for clarification and urged careful communication to preserve unity.

On the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport Cargo Village fire, Salahuddin reiterated that investigations were ongoing. “Some incidents might be linked to groups aiming to destabilize the country, but no conclusions can be drawn until the investigation is complete,” he said.
