BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called on the authorities to ensure uncompromising justice as the International Crimes Tribunal prepares to deliver its verdict on Monday in the landmark case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two of her top aides.
In a post on his verified Facebook page, Fakhrul declared: “Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal is set to announce the verdict tomorrow (Monday) in the case against Sheikh Hasina, who faces five charges of crimes against humanity over the brutal violence and repression in Dhaka last year. We demand full justice! The people of Bangladesh deserve a transparent and fair trial.”
Earlier, speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Fakhrul warned of an organised attempt by “vested quarters” to plunge the country into chaos ahead of the verdict. “The trial over the genocide committed by fascist Hasina reaches its conclusion tomorrow (Monday). The nation is gripped by fear and uncertainty,” he said.
He urged citizens and political parties to resist those he claims are exploiting this moment to destabilise the country. “We must stand firm. We cannot allow Bangladesh to be dragged back into anarchy,” Fakhrul added.
Highlighting the role of the people, particularly students, in reclaiming democracy, Fakhrul said: “The sacrifices of our youth have opened a window for restoring democratic rights. This is a historic opportunity. We must ensure the path to democratic transition is clear and unstoppable.”
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) is scheduled to announce its verdict on Monday in the case against Hasina and her two aides, who face five counts of alleged crimes against humanity linked to the deadly student-led uprising in Dhaka during July–August last year.
