In a triumphant return to power after nearly two decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is fast-tracking preparations to form its new cabinet following a historic landslide win in Thursday’s national elections. Party Chairman Tarique Rahman, set to take oath as Prime Minister for the first time, is personally overseeing the selection of ministers, aiming to create a lean, effective, and corruption-free government.
According to party insiders, the cabinet will blend seasoned leaders with young talent, with appointments guided by integrity, administrative expertise, and contributions to the BNP’s movements. Key figures under consideration include Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members such as Dr Khondkar Mosharraf Hossain, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and technocrats from both the party and its alliance partners.
The BNP-led alliance secured 213 of 299 seats, leaving the opposition, led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, with 76 seats. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of MPs and ministers are already underway, with the oath-taking expected on Sunday or Monday. Once completed, Tarique Rahman will be formally elected Leader of the House, signalling the start of a new era of governance.
The incoming government has promised a 100-day action plan prioritising law and order, economic revival, job creation, anti-corruption measures, and reforms in education and healthcare. BNP leaders have stressed the exclusion of controversial figures, aiming for a cabinet that is transparent, accountable, and capable of delivering results.
“This cabinet will ensure efficiency, integrity, and good governance,” said Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed added: “Our government will build a merit- and technology-based state, reform the Constitution, and make this parliament one of the most legislatively active since independence.”
The BNP’s sweeping victory, combined with a carefully structured cabinet, sets the stage for a decisive new chapter in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
